derrycourthouseTHE man who dramatically escaped from police custody at Derry’s court house last week was today remanded in custody for a month.

And this time cops were taking no chances with Derry man Dean Beattie as he stood in the dock of the city’s magistrates’ court in handcuffs to prevent any further bolts to freedom.

Last Wednesday, 22-year-old was brought by police van from Strand Road PSNI station to the Bishops Street courthouse for a planned first remand hearing..

But he gave his police escorts the slip as he was not handcuffed and climbed over two ten feet fences.

He then ran through the turnstile exit and legged down Bishops Street and was believed to have been heading in the direction of the Bogside.

But after posting a rant on his Facebook page, cops tracked him down and arrested him on Tuesday morning.

Today, Beattie was charged with armed robbery, assaulting a man and woman, theft of £100, two mobile phones and Christmas presents.

The offences took place at a flat on Northland Road on December 12 when a couple were confronted and assaulted by a number of men.

He was further charged today with escaping from lawful custody on December 23 and intimidating a witness on Monday, December 28.

Beattie was remanded in custody to Hydebank Wood Young Offenders Centre.

He will appear back before Derry Magistrates’ Court via video link from Hydebank on Thursday, January 21, 2016.

One man is currently on remand in prison in relation to the same robbery.
